DECEMBER 29TH TO JANUARY 28TH
ARTIST RECEPTION DECEMBER 29, 6-8PM
616 EAST 9TH STREET NYC
Kinescope.Gallery is pleased to announce a new installation by Sally Lelong entitled SPURIOUS which opens on Friday, December 29th, and closes on Sunday, January 28th, with an artist’s reception on December 29th, from 6 - 8:00 p.m
Lelong’s new work, SPURIOUS , takes shape as a window installation that offers an open-ended commentary on our contemporary culture—the demeaning of our dearest values, the sense of political disenfranchisement of the electorate, the almost farcical debasement of our language and of truth, and the fracturing of community. Using a window space to create a tableau continues Lelong’s practice of exploiting the constraints of a small area to create a work that develops from, interacts with, and pushes back against the conventions of the traditional window display and of the viewers’ experiences of such. Drawing on her rich vocabulary that cross many artistic practices, she presents the viewer with a complex and multi-layered vision, which exploits the scale of the space within a window and utilizes ambient lighting to draw in viewers to this transformative re-visioning of a penny arcade. By using the public viewing space of a window, Lelong welcomes the casual passer-by as well of the more intentional viewer, offering each individual an open-ended experience, the opportunity to impose their own meaning, political, personal, intellectual, and emotional.
Since the 1970s she has exhibited her work in the United States and abroad. She is director of The Phatory, which she established in 2002.
